Unhappy with the Floss Toss ~ the Woes of a Stitcher

gaelic-banner-dracolairA little over a month ago I finally broke down and bought the supplies for the project that keeps me up at night wanting to stitch it – Gaelic Banner from Dracolair.

I’ve been drooling over it for the longest time, having all these mental conversations with myself about whether or not I could tackle such a big project. In fact, I bought the kit for Paisley Pumpkin that I’ve stitching in the same order as those supplies.

But you’ll notice I haven’t posted a start on Gaelic Banner yet. I’m having fabric issues. I just can’t find the perfect fabric. I’ve gone through several pieces of amazing fabric already and once I put them with the chart and the threads I decide they’re all wrong. Kelly at Stitchnmomma even created a piece just for me, which is beautiful and awesome and going to be used for another project.

I went searching for works in progress of the banner this morning to see if I could find some inspiration. Everyone seems to be stitching it on white or cream colored fabric. I suppose there’s a reason that. I’ve done floss tosses on mauve, several different shades of blues, and sort of burnt umber color. Not happy with any of those, not even the blues and I love blue fabrics.

So I’m looking at neutral fabrics now, maybe a tea-dyed or parchment sort of color would work nicely. Of course, the silver lining is that I’ve grown my fabric stash some more with all this shopping around for the “perfect” fabric for this project. Not that I needed more fabric necessarily, but it’s my favorite type of stash acquisition.

Okay, I’m off to browse these neutral tones. Would love to hear from you in the comments below if you’ve ever had a hard time choosing a fabric.

Happy Stitching!

  1. You’ll find the perfect fabric. Keep searching. You’ll be much happier if you don’t compromise.

  2. I know the lure of the hand-dyed and colored fabrics draws me most of the time. However, there are times when just plain old cream or white is all that is really needed for a design.

  3. I think you’re on to something with the tea dyed fabby. I bet that will work well with the floss colors. Or, have you looked at fiddlers cloth? At any rate, looking forward to stitching updates! Have a great stitching weekend.

  4. I think this would look great on a pale geeen fabric. Something like Silkweaver’s Morning Dew; Crossed Wing’s Whispering Pine; or Picture This Plus’: Chrysalis, Heritage, Highland, or Valor.

  5. Have you thought about Lambswool? It’s my favorite neutral and might work well with your colors.

  6. I think the pattern would like great on Calypso by picture this plus!. But of course this is my own personal taste.
