Cross Stitch Apps for Your Droid Phone

I had such a great time guest posting here on Stitching the Night Away last month, that I wanted to follow up with another post on Cross Stitch apps for your Droid phone. Many thanks to Loretta for having me back.

I am finding my smartphone to be one of the best tools to have in my project bag. Developers are adding new cross stitch apps to the Android Market all the time. There are a number of really helpful ones and here they are…

Cross Stitch Fabric Calculator – If you read here then hopefully you know all about Stitching the Night Away’s own cross stitch app. Just plug in a couple of numbers and it will let you know how what size fabric you need. No more guess work and then being short when you get to the end of a project. There is both a free and a paid version (one with ads and the other without).

YouTube – One of the best places to watch cross stitch tutorial videos is on YouTube. And if you have a Droid phone like the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S then it comes preloaded with a YouTube app. Just open it up and do a search for the cross stitch technique you are looking for. You can watch the video right on your smartphone. This is a great way to learn something new or to gain inspiration for your next project.

Floss Checklist – One of the biggest components of cross stitching is the floss. It can also be overwhelming because there are just so many of them. Different colors, different brands and how do you keep track of it all? Fortunately there is an app for that. This handy app lets you keep an inventory of everything that you own plus you can create a shopping list with the “need” feature. No more standing in the aisle at your local craft store saying “I think this is the color that I need” and then getting home to find you are off by a few shades.

Stitcher’s Helper – I never have just one project in the works at a time. There is often multiple projects around my house in various bags and baskets that I am working on. This droid app is great for keeping track of everything. You can add a project, attach a photo, and add notes. Keep track of what pattern you are using, where you are in the pattern, what colors of floss that you need and more. You can list a project as being in progress, on hold, and completed. Plus this app also has a number of calculators built into it. This app can also be used by knitters, quilters, and for embroidery projects.

Cross Stitch Thread Converter – Ever have a pattern that calls for a certain brand and color of floss and you go into your stash and you don’t own it? Well this app could help you out. Just type in the brand and color code and it will covert from DMC to Anchor and vice versa. This app can also be helpful if you run to the store and they are out of stock of the brand and color that you are looking for.

I hope that these cross stitch apps help you out with all of your projects. I would love to know what your favorites are. You can share them in the comments below.

Wondering if you have a recommendation for an app, or if there is one, to design your own cross-stitch pattern.

I’m not sure if there is an app for that at the moment. I use PC Stitch for designing patterns
