Usually, I take a stitching project with me when I travel, and the few times I’ve flown I haven’t had a problem with my tiny travel scissors being in one of my checked bags.
However, when I travel by myself for business conferences, it’s just me and I don’t plan on paying to check my one suitcase since it’s carry-on sized. I’ll have my suitcase and my totebag/purse with me and that’s about it, I travel pretty light. Scissors in the carry-on can be hit or miss, under a certain length with a rounded tip is supposed to be fine according to most airlines. I know some folks have mentioned using nail clippers or kids scissors in the past. I like to pack a Clover Thread Cutter just so I don’t have to think about having possibly pointy things in my bag going through security.
I know they are really being picky about what passes security these days – I don’t even want to think about the TSA pat down on the way through security in Atlanta *shudder* So all of this has me wondering today, what do you take with you when you travel? I usually carry a smaller project with me and put all the threads and accessories in a zip lock bag.
Now that you mention about the cutter – we recently flew to Las Vegas for a driving trip to the grand canyon and mesa verde and no one checking baggage made a peep about my small child sized scissors in my carry-on bag with my stitching supplies – not on either flight there or back.
Hmmm I asked this question somewhere and I thought I was told we can take our little embroidery scissors now. You can check with the TSA site before you leave to see what it says since it’s always changing. This is a great idea though!
I haven’t flown anywhere in a while, but the next time I do, I’m definitely planning to pick one of these handy things up. Have a great trip!
I would think cuticle scissors could be taken, as they are extremely sharp. I always used nail clippers. I’m extra cautious after being refused to security pass because of my facial cleanser. I had too many liquids in my bag. They said toss it (Mary Kay face stuff, I don’t think so) or go check my bag. I checked the bag. But that was before they started charging for it.
I have had a clover cutter for many years, specifically for air travel. I always worry about taking needles on a plane.
I saw a lady on a plane I was on doing cross stitch and she had embroidery scissors, she said they were allowed. I didn’t think they were so I had brought a pair of scrapbooking zigzag scissors! They didn’t take them away. It was kind of a pain to snip the thread with them!
On the TSA website it says that metal scissors with pointed tips and blades less than 4 inches long are fine to carry on. Most embroidery scissors fall into that category. At least the last 4 times I’ve flown, I’ve carried on scissors and needles with no problem.

Yes, most airlines have gone back to allowing small embroidery scissors. I would still take a self addressed stamped envelope so that you can mail them to yourself if they try to confiscated them.
That is an absolutely fabulous invention! And cute, too! Especially the way CobWeb Corner’s dressed it up! I don’t suppose there’d be any such thing for us crocheters… I lost a pair of sewing scissors out of my crochet kit once at the airport. Thank GOD I had just recently switched out my scissors – I usually keep my Grandmother’s scissors in there! I would have thrown a FIT over those!!! I don’t even know why I’d switched them ….guess Grandma whispered in my ear or something!
They make a larger Clover cutter for yarn crafters!
